Maximilian Pölzl, who started working for myAbility in 2018, is also a student at the Faculty of Law in Vienna. Eight years ago, just before final high school graduation exams, he had an accident injuring his spine and has been in a wheelchair ever since. He says it is not easy to be a student with a disability in Austria, as most of the buildings were built before accessibility and inclusion were considered. Although they were open to minor adjustments at the Faculty of Law, Max realized that it was necessary to think much more broadly when it came to the accessibility of buildings for people with disabilities. Working in myAbility, he is dedicated to barrier-free construction, talking to companies about the disability and accessibility of entrances to buildings, as well as, meeting rooms and kitchens.
It is important to be open, to offer, but also to accept help. That way we learn about each other. Max loves to cook, and in his apartment, he has an accessible kitchen that his uncle helped make. He is also a big fan of drones and technology, which he spends his free time on, and as he recently starting working part time this year, he has a bit more free time. Due to the whole pandemic situation, we as a team also had to adapt to understand the importance of digital platforms. In a home office, even a visible disability becomes invisible. |
